Hurricanes, Floods, Fires, Blizzards, and Avalanches: Are you prepared?

by Shirley Hilts-Adams, Co-Chair, Public Policy Committee

During the past several months we have witnessed disasters across the nation. Few states, if any, were not affected by fires, floods, blizzards, avalanches, ice jams, or sand storms. Families were forced to evacuate their homes with little notice, sometimes resulting in a separation of family members.

Planning for an emergency or disaster can ease some of the trauma. Having copies of important legal papers (deeds; mortgage books; copies of credit cards, driver’s licenses, and insurance cards); cash; and a to-go bag will lessen anxiety and aid in recovery. Discussing such preparations with children and with young adults who may be living on their own can increase their self-confidence and ability to cope. Visit the Red Cross site for additional information, developing a family plan and making preparations http://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies#About.
