The Honorable Chuck Schumer

The Honorable Paul Ryan

The Honorable Nancy Pelosi
Minority Leader

Dear Senators McConnell and Schumer and Representatives Ryan and Pelosi:

The members of the Learning Disabilities Association of America (LDA) call upon you to issue a bipartisan statement and take whatever action possible to address domestic terrorism as perpetrated by neo-Nazi, white supremacist, and other groups espousing hate and fear.  The language and actions of those groups in Charlottesville do not represent American values and serve to marginalize and terrorize a vast number of people in our wonderful country.

As a group that represents individuals with learning disabilities, their families, and the professionals that work with them, we are compelled to speak out.  Individuals with disabilities, throughout history have been singled out as weak, "abnormal," and "unfit" to participate fully in society.  They have been subjected to ridicule, bullying, and much worse.  Even today individuals with disabilities continue to fight for full acceptance and participation in all aspects of life.  LDA supports and participates in these efforts and empathizes with all groups that are the objects of unjustifiable prejudice and hatred.

You, as our congressional leaders, must join together and let all citizens and residents of this nation know that you stand with them.  You must loudly and strongly – and in a bipartisan manner – oppose domestic terrorism and all forms of intolerance, hate, discrimination, and prejudice directed at individuals based on disability, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, or immigration status.

We believe now truly is the time to reassert the legacy of the United States as a country that appreciates and celebrates diversity. We will be happy to assist and support you in your efforts.

Thank you for considering these comments.

Sincerely,

Patricia M. Lillie
President
