Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)

The ESEA was originally signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965. The Act has been reauthorized several times, and the latest revision is known as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA (Public Law 114-95) was signed into law by President Barack Obama on December 10, 2015.

The purpose of ESSA is “to provide all children significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps.”

Under the law, states are given new authority and responsibility for accountability for student success.
