Summary of Performance (SOP)

IDEA 04 requires a "summary of the child's academic achievement and functional performance" for each student before they exit from secondary school. Often shortened to SOP, the Summary of Performance must include "recommendations on how to assist the child in meeting the child's postsecondary goals"

A model Summary of Performance (Word document) endorsed by LDA and other organizations can be adapted by states and districts to develop their own SOP format to help meet post-secondary education and/or employment goals. Instead of the evaluation mandated by IDEA in the past, teachers, families, and students will now need to become familiar with the SOP used in their own high school.

Adaptation of SOP by states and districts
Both parents and teachers or other education professionals may get involved in development of an SOP to be used by their state, district, or school.

Contact the legislative bodies, as well as Education and Vocational Rehabilitation departments in your state and local district. Share the SOP model template with them and offer to help share or disseminate it with others that are, or should be interested. Ask about Task Forces or Committees that are developing or refining SOPs and offer to participate in such activities.
